In class, we are discussing different types of narrative texts, prewriting, the process of writing a story and publishing it. For homework, please read this story with your child, then have your child choose the next step in the story. Your child can vote for his favorite option on the sidebar. The option with the most votes will be the winner (we will discuss the winning option in class tomorrow). Then, have your child draw an illustration of some part of today's portion of our story. Please send this to school tomorrow in your child's folder. We will be working on our story this week, and each day, we will vote for a new "option" that will continue to form our story. At the end of the week, we will put the story we wrote together with the illustrations and post it here on the blog. Now to the story ...
Once upon a time in a land far away, there was a boy named Sam. Sam was a fun boy with many friends. Each day, Sam and his friends would play in the forest near their homes. They would climb trees and look up into the sky. Their favorite game was "I Spy Clouds." They would each look at the clouds and guess what shape the other person saw.
Sam would say, "I spy with my little eye a shape in that cloud," as he pointed to his cloud.
"Do you see a pirate?" his friend Jackson asked.
"No," said Sam.
"Do you see an igloo?"
"No."
The game went on for hours as the boys sat high up in the forest trees. It went on so long that the boys did not see the large hawk come to her nest. The eggs in her nest were gone, and the mother hawk was very angry. She thought the boys hid the eggs.
The mother hawk was not an ordinary hawk; she had magical powers. She swopped down to Sam's branch and startled him so bad he lost his balance.
"What have you done with my eggs?" the mother hawk demanded.
"Nothing, we have only been playing our cloud game!" exclaimed Sam, scared as he could be.
"Since you will not tell me what you have done with my eggs, I am going to turn you into an egg!"
And just like that, Sam's body turned into an egg. He climbed down the tree and ran all the way home, crying. Jackson ran right behind him, and when they made it home ...
Option 1
... Sam's mother was scared. She had never seen a big egg with arms and legs before. Jackson explained everything that happened, and Sam's mother soon realized that the egg was her son. She brought Sam in for a nice warm bath as she talked with Sam's father about their problem.
Option 2
... the doors were locked. No one answered the door when he knocked. Sam felt all alone and very scared, until he realized that his parents were at the King's market. He decided he would go to the castle and try to find his parents.
Option 3
... Sam decided he would hide instead of go inside. He was scared to show his parents that he was an egg, so he hid in the barn. Soon his parents became worried. It became dark, and they started searching for Sam.
